How to make printable sudoku

  1. Give it a title. It prints across the top of the page.
  2. Pick a grid and a level: 4 x 4, 6 x 6 or 9 x 9; easy, medium or hard.
  3. Choose how many puzzles, from 1 to 30, and how many to a page: 1, 2, 4 or 6.
  4. Choose your paper: US Letter or A4.
  5. Print it, or download the PDF. Puzzles first, then the answers.

The rules

Fill every empty square so that each row, each column and each box holds every digit once. On a 9 x 9 that's the digits 1 to 9 and nine boxes of nine squares. A 6 x 6 uses 1 to 6, a 4 x 4 uses 1 to 4.

Easy, medium or hard

  • Easy: a 9 x 9 starts with 36 to 39 numbers showing. You can finish it with the two basic moves: a square where only one digit fits, or a digit that fits in only one square of its row, column or box.
  • Medium: the same two moves, but with as many numbers taken away as those moves still allow. Fewer clues, more looking.
  • Hard: on a 9 x 9, nearly always needs more than the basics: pairs, triples and a digit locked into one line of a box.

On 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 grids, harder mostly means fewer numbers to start with. The starting numbers sit in a balanced pattern: turn the page upside down and the gaps match.

Sudoku for children and beginners

Start with a 4 x 4 at easy. It takes a few minutes and teaches the one idea that matters: each digit once per row, column and box. Move to 6 x 6, then to a 9 x 9 easy.

Printing and the answers

Answers print at the back, up to six to a page. The starting numbers are bold and the filled-in answers lighter, so you can see at a glance which were clues. Untick Print the answers to print the puzzles alone.

For bigger digits, print one puzzle to a page. If the PDF won't download, press Print and choose "Save as PDF".

Printable sudoku: questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up, no ads.

Does every puzzle have one answer?

Yes. Each puzzle is solved start to finish by reasoning, which also proves there's only one answer, and a separate checker tests it again as it will print.

Can I print sudoku large for an older reader?

Yes. Choose one puzzle per page and the 9 x 9 grid fills the width of the page. For a whole book in big print, see Large Print Sudoku on our books page.

Can I sell puzzles I make here?

Yes. Use them for anything: classrooms, newsletters, party games, or your own puzzle books for sale. You don't need to ask or pay. Free sheets keep one small line at the bottom of each page with our name and web address. A Pro version, coming later, will make sheets without that line and export a whole book at once.
