How to make a word scramble

  1. Type your words, one on each line or separated by commas.
  2. Add a hint if you like, such as a definition or a sentence with a blank.
  3. The maker mixes up the letters of each word. Press the button again for a new mix.
  4. Print it, or download the PDF with the answer key.

A scramble is quick to explain: here are the letters, put them back in order. It's good for a warm-up, a center or the last five minutes of class.

Word scramble tips for teachers

  • Use this week's spelling list. Unscrambling makes children think about which letters go where, which is the whole point of a spelling list.
  • Add definitions for vocabulary. A scramble with a clue checks spelling and meaning at once. "Animal that carries its house on its back" with LTRTEU is a fair puzzle; LTRTEU alone is a guessing game.
  • Watch for words with two answers. LISTEN and SILENT use the same letters, and so do EAT, TEA and ATE. Without a hint, a student who writes SILENT isn't wrong. Add a clue or pick another word.
  • Short words for young children. Four to six letters is plenty for early grades. Long words get very hard very quickly, because there are so many more ways to arrange the letters.
  • Mix in a theme. Weather words in a weather unit, team names before the big game.

The answer key

The answer key lists every word in the same order as the puzzle, so you can check a stack of papers fast. Print it separately, or keep it for yourself.

Word scramble: questions

Will a scrambled word ever come out the same as the real word?

It shouldn't. A "scramble" that reads the right way round is a giveaway.

Can I use phrases?

Yes. Spaces are dropped, so ICE CREAM scrambles as one word.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up.

Can I sell puzzles I make here?

Yes. Use them for anything: classrooms, newsletters, party games, or your own puzzle books for sale. You don't need to ask or pay. Free sheets keep one small line at the bottom of each page with our name and web address. A Pro version, coming later, will make sheets without that line and export a whole book at once.
